Background of the Study
Academic research in universities has traditionally relied on manual methods of data collection, analysis, and interpretation, which can be time-consuming and error-prone (Olumide et al., 2024). With the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), cognitive computing has emerged as a promising tool for transforming academic research by automating complex tasks such as data analysis, pattern recognition, and knowledge extraction (Kola et al., 2025). AI-based cognitive computing systems simulate human-like reasoning and learning, enabling researchers to tackle large and complex datasets that would be otherwise impossible to analyze manually (Eze et al., 2023). These systems use natural language processing, machine learning, and other AI techniques to enhance the research process by providing more accurate insights and predicting trends (Abubakar & Akinyemi, 2024).

Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria, Kaduna State, is one of the largest and most prestigious institutions of higher learning in Nigeria. With a strong research focus across multiple disciplines, ABU is uniquely positioned to benefit from the integration of AI-based cognitive computing tools. The university’s research initiatives span diverse fields such as science, engineering, and social sciences, all of which could benefit from enhanced data analysis and automated reasoning. The application of AI in academic research at ABU could lead to faster data processing, improved research outcomes, and the identification of patterns and insights that might be missed through traditional methods (Usman & Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing potential of AI to revolutionize academic research, Ahmadu Bello University currently relies heavily on traditional research methods, which are time-consuming and limited in terms of their ability to analyze complex data sets (Rashid & Nnamdi, 2023). The lack of AI-based cognitive computing tools hampers researchers' ability to fully leverage the vast amounts of data generated in academic settings. There is a need for an efficient system that can automate data analysis, improve accuracy, and enhance the overall research process. This study aims to explore how AI-based cognitive computing can transform academic research practices at Ahmadu Bello University.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To investigate the potential benefits of AI-based cognitive computing in improving academic research processes at Ahmadu Bello University.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of cognitive computing systems in automating complex research tasks and data analysis.

  3. To explore how AI-based cognitive computing can enhance research outcomes and collaboration at Ahmadu Bello University.

Research Questions

  1. What are the potential benefits of integrating AI-based cognitive computing into academic research at Ahmadu Bello University?

  2. How effective are AI-based cognitive computing systems in automating complex research tasks and data analysis?

  3. What impact will AI-based cognitive computing have on academic research outcomes and collaboration at Ahmadu Bello University?

Research Hypotheses

  1. AI-based cognitive computing will significantly enhance the efficiency and accuracy of academic research at Ahmadu Bello University.

  2. The integration of AI-based cognitive computing will improve the quality of academic publications and research outcomes.

  3. AI-based cognitive computing will foster greater collaboration and interdisciplinary research at Ahmadu Bello University.

Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into how AI-based cognitive computing can improve academic research at Ahmadu Bello University. The findings could offer a model for other universities in Nigeria and beyond to incorporate AI into their research processes, leading to more effective, efficient, and impactful academic work.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the application of AI-based cognitive computing in academic research at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, located in Zaria LGA, Kaduna State. The research will examine multiple disciplines within the university, with data collected from faculty and research departments involved in ongoing academic research.

Definitions of Terms
